Safety switches (RCDs): what they are and why they save lives
Walk up to most household switchboards and you will see a mix of switches and breakers with different labels. Understanding what each one does — and what it doesn't do — is genuinely important for your safety.
Fuses and circuit breakers: protecting wiring from overcurrent
A fuse or circuit breaker is designed to protect the wiring in your walls from damage caused by too much current. If a circuit is overloaded — too many appliances running at once — or a short circuit occurs, the breaker trips (or the fuse blows) to prevent the wiring from overheating and potentially catching fire.
Fuses and circuit breakers respond to overcurrent. They do not detect small fault currents that are large enough to kill a person but too small to trip a breaker.
Safety switches (RCDs): protecting people from electrocution
A safety switch — correctly called a Residual Current Device, or RCD — works on an entirely different principle. It continuously monitors the difference between the current flowing into a circuit and the current flowing back out. In a healthy circuit, these are equal. If current is "leaking" to earth — for example, through a person who has touched a live wire — the RCD detects this imbalance and cuts power within about 30 milliseconds. That is fast enough to prevent a fatal shock in most situations.
This is the key point: an RCD protects people; a circuit breaker protects wiring. You need both. An RCD will not prevent wiring from overheating during an overload, and a circuit breaker will not save you from electrocution.
What does an RCD look like?
Safety switches are usually identified on a switchboard with a label reading "Safety Switch" or "RCD," and they have a small Test button. Pressing this button — which you should do every three months or so — briefly simulates a leakage fault and should cause the switch to trip. If it does not trip, the device may be faulty and needs to be replaced by a licensed electrician.
What if my home doesn't have an RCD?
Older Victorian homes often have switchboards with circuit breakers but no safety switches, or safety switches protecting only some circuits. Current regulations require RCD protection on power and lighting circuits in new work, and many electrical jobs that touch existing wiring now trigger a requirement to add RCD protection. Even where it is not legally required, fitting safety switches to unprotected circuits is one of the most cost-effective safety upgrades an electrician can make.
